Four railroads served Durango at the beginning of the 20th century.

The Durango & Silverton railroad still takes passengers up through the remote Animas River canyon to the old mining town of Silverton, an all day roundtrip.

Here the train is building steam just after leaving downtown Durango and crossing the Animas River bridge.
