Durango nestles in the Animas River valley at the edge of the San Juan Mountains...

This is looking north from the edge of the mesa at Fort Lewis College. The broad low mountain is Animas Mountain, a park with trails for hiking and mountain biking. The big building is the Mercy Hospital. There is a paved trail through town along the west (left) side of the Animas River.
